CHIRPING OF THE NIGHTINGALE. English, Country Dance (6/4 or 6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. This country dance and tune was printed in the first edition of John Playford's "English Dancing Master (London, 1651), and was retained in subsequent editions of the long-running series through the 8th edition of 1690, after which it was dropped. It is a companion tune, of sorts, to his "Chirping of the Lark," the tune just prior.

Printed sources: Barow (Complete Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master), 1985; No. 16, p. 20. Raven (English Country Dance Tunes), 1984; p. 43.
