MARTIN'S WALTZ. Old-Time, Bluegrass; Waltz. D Major ('A' part) & A Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Frets): AA'BB' (Phillips). Named after (composed by) bluegrass fiddler Benny Martin. Martin himself called it "The Right Melody," and, according to Frazier Moss, "in a statement made at a special tribute to him that was held at the Cookeville Drama Center in 1987, Martin wrote the composition on some toilet paper after hearing Frazier play and then gave it to Frazier" [W.L. Montell, ed., Grassroots Music in the Upper Cumberland, p. 264]

Source for notated version: Benny Martin via John Hartford (1964, Byron Berline) [Frets]; Byron Berline and Benny Thomasson (Texas) [Phillips].

Printed sources: Frets Magazine, "Byron Berline: The Fiddle," June 1986; p. 50. Phillips (Traditional American Fiddle Tunes), vol. 2, 1995; p. 279.
