UNION JACK HORNPIPE. Scottish, Hornpipe (cut time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Composed by J.C. Paton, a well-known teacher of music in Edinburgh (according to his obituary notice in The Musical Times, Oct. 1, 1886). Paton is buried in St. Cuthbert's churchyard in a family plot, where his children are also interred. Paton died young, at age 31; one of his children predeceased him (an infant, 6 weeks old), but his surviving children died young as well. A son, aged 12, died the year after his father, and his remaining child, a daughter died in 1909, aged 26.
