CAPTAIN HOLMES. AKA and see "Captain Homes," "Cornelius Curtin's Big Balloon," "Hide and Go Seek." American, English, Irish; Jig. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is of unknown provenance, but printed earliest with the "Captain Homes/Holmes" title in an English collection called A Companion to the reticule (1833), in three parts. However, the melody has been identified as a variant of the Irish "Hills of Glenorchy". Paul de Grae finds related melodies in the "Apples in Winter (1)" family. The tune appears in one of Elias Howe's publications (Ryan's Mammoth Collection, 1883), note for note the same, save that the third part was dropped, and the name in the title changed from 'Homes' to 'Holmes'.
