CHESHIRE ALLEY. English, Jig. The tune appears in the 11th edition of Henry Playford's Dancing Master (1701). It was retained in the 12th and 13th editions (1703 & 1706), then was replaced by a different melody (also called "Cheshire Alley"). However, the original (1701) "Cheshire Alley" melody was replaced in 17th and 18th editions (1721 & 1728), then published by John Young, heir to the Playfords' publishing enterprise.
