MONROE'S HORNPIPE. Bluegrass, Breakdown. USA, Kentucky. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by mandolinist Bill Monroe, the "Father of Bluegrass." The tune was recorded by Monroe and his band around 1958, although not released on LP until 1965's "Bluegrass Instrumentals". However, the tune was in Monore's repertoire preceding these events. Some see resemblance to the old-time tune "Big-Eyed Rabbit."

Source for notated version: Bill Monroe [Brody].

Printed sources: Brody (Fiddler's Fakebook), 1983; p. 195.

Recorded sources: Decca 74601, Bill Monroe- "Bluegrass Instrumentals" (1965). Voyager 301, Byron Berline- "Fiddle Jam Session." County 761, Kenny Baker- "Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe."
