Back to Mother Quoth Hodge
MOTHER QUOTH HODGE (the New Way). English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Mother Quoth Hodge" is a different but similar melody that was the vehicle for several songs in early 18th century ballad operas. Another tune, a later successor, called "Mother Quoth Hodge, the new way" first appeared in David Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (London, 1756). The melody features a slow part interjected into faster parts, as in the morris dance tune 'slows'.
