NEW YEAR, THE. Canadian, Pipe March (6/8 time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. A composition of Cape Breton piper Malcolm Gillis (1856-1929), the 'Margaree Bard'. Gillis was a huge musical talent, according to Barry Shears (1986), and could play the accordion, violin, bagpipes, uilleann pipes, piano and organ. He directed the local choir and composed several popular Gaelic songs.
