BELLES OF LEWISTON. AKA and see "Blue Eyed Lassie (1)," "Early Rising," "Lewis’s Reel." American, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune appeared in Providence, Rhode Island, violinist and dance fiddler George Saunders 1847 violin tutor as "Lewis’s Reel", in which Saunders claimed composer credit for the tune. The title "Belles of Lewiston" (probably meant to be a reference to Lewiston, Maine) appears in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) some 36 years later. It was either a distortion or miss-hearing of Saunders' title, or a deliberate obscuring of it. Francis O'Neill published it as "Early Rising" in Music of Ireland (1903).
