The index to Bunting's 1840 collection gives the source as "O'Neill, harper and from the hired mourners or keeners at Armagh; and from a MS. above 100 years old." A melody with the title "An Irish Cry" can be found in Thompson's Hibernian Muse of 1786, followed by its jig.
