COLOSSEUM, THE. AKA and see "Coliseum," "Harlequin Gambols," "Harlequin Hornpipe (4)," "Kay's Hornpipe," "Pet of the House." Scottish, Irish; Hornpipe. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Kerr): AABB (Honeyman). The tune appears earliest under the title "Harlequin Gambols" as a country dance in Samuel, Ann and Peter Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 5 (London, 1788). The first strain is shared with "Murillo's Lesson," an American shape-note hymn and air. See also note for "Annotation:Once upon my Cheek."
