FOX'S SLEEP, THE (Codlad An Sionnaig). AKA - "Foxes Sleep (The)." AKA and see "When he who adores thee." Irish, Slow Air (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part (Ó Canainn): AB (O'Neill). The alternate title, "When He Who Adores Thee", comes from the name of a Thomas Moore song set to the air. John Mulholland's (1810) air [1] is similar in the first strain to the version given by O'Neill, but diverges in the second strain, albeit maintaining a similar, if distanced, melodic contour. The air was also included in Crotch's Specimens of various styles of music referred to in a Course of Lectures read at Oxford and London, and adapted to keyed instruments by W. Crotch, Mus. Doc., Prof. Mus. Oxon. Crotch, who was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music (London) from 1823-1832 delivered lectures on various types of national music from 1800-1804 and 1820, and had them bound in three volumes, familiarly referred to as "Crotch's Specimens". The Irish "specimens," of which this was one, are contained in volume 1.
