OVER THE BORDER--MEXICAN WAR. American, March (2/4 time). USA, southwestern Pa. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Bayard (1981) identifies this as an "unmistakeable" version of a quickstep march in James Aird's Selections of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 1, 1778, No. 166 ("Colonel Archibald Campbell’s Quick Step"). If this is indeed the tune Bayard compared his Pennsylvania march to, it is hardly "unmistakable" for there is no obvious resemblance between the two. It is not related to the Scottish melody "(Blue Bonnets) Over the Border (1)," except by similarity of title.

Source for notated version: Hoge MS., No. 65 (a fife MS from southwestern Pa.) [Bayard].

Printed sources: Bayard (Dance to the Fiddle), 1981; No. 222, pp. 178-179.
