BOAT IS ON THE SHORE, THE. AKA - "My Boat is on the Shore." AKA and see "Brass Nuts," "Grand Old Duke of York (The)." Irish, English; March (2/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. Irish researcher Conor Ward finds the melody in a few 19th century musicians' manuscripts from County Longford, Ireland, in versions very similar to Peter Kennedy's "Grand Old Duke of York (The)." It was entered into the Leonard-Kernan manuscript (c. 1844-1850) of Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford, with the title "The Boat is on the Shore," while a quite similar version, remarks Ward, appears in the O'Farrell manuscript (c. 1860-1880) of Aughadowry, Ballinamuck, Co. Longford as "My Boat is on the Shore" (set a tone higher, in the key of 'D').
