COUNTESS OF SUTHERLAND'S STRATHSPEY, THE. Scottish, Strathspey. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Although Alexander McGlashan published it more than twenty-five years before she did, the strathspey is the composition of Magdalene Stirling (1765-1846), the youngest daughter of Sir William Stirling, 4th Baronet of Ardoch, and his wife Christian Erskine. Her tunes were often published (sometimes attributed to "biography:Miss Stirling of Ardoch") by others before she issued them in a small volume called Twelve Tunes in 1812. Magdalene never married.
