Francis O'Neill obtained the melody from Chicago Police Sergeant James O'Neill, a fiddler originally from County Down and O'Neill's hardworking collaborator on the original Music of Ireland (1903). "The Advice" also appears in Charles Villiers Stanford's edition of The Complete Petrie Collection of Irish Music (1905; no. 764, p. 191) set in the key of F mixolydian.
