PASTIME ON THE LEVEE. American, Hornpipe or Schottische. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Boston music publisher Elias Howe identified this tune as a “Negro Jig,” whose source was “Jimmy Norton, the Boss Jig Player.” Norton was presumably a band-leader or principal instrumentalist in the Boston, Massachusetts, area in the mid-19th century, and was the source for several tunes in the Howe publications.
