HIGHLANDER'S KNEEBUCKLE [2], THE (Búcla Glúine an Híleantóra). AKA and see "Pat Ward's Jig," "Leather Buttons." Irish, Single Jig (12/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Darley & McCall): AA'BB (Breathnach). A single jig setting of the tune which is usually found as a reel. Breathnach (1996) says the tune was published as early as 1800, and that it "now enjoys a vogue among present-day pipers under the name 'Pat Ward's Jig'." It was source Pat Mitchell who called the tune "Pat Ward's Jig" after a piper who lived in Drogheda, County Louth, who died in 1927. "Highlander's Kneebuckle (1)" and "Highlander's Kneebuckle (5) (The)" are reel-time setting of the same melody. See also Darley & McCall's (1912) "Galway Reel (4)" for another variant of this tune.

Source for notated version: piper Pat Mitchell, 1972 (Dublin, Ireland), who learned the tune from Séamus Ennis, who had the tune from his father, who in turn had learned the tune from piper Ward [Breathnach].
