PENINGTON’S RANT. English, Jig. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was first published by John Johnson in his Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 6 (London, 1748, p. 33). Johnson also published (in 1748) a melody called “Pennington’s Maggot,” so perhaps Pennington was a dancing master. Thompson (Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 1), 1757; No. 30.
