VAN BEUREN'S HORNPIPE. American, Hornpipe (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by M. (presumably Michael) Higgins and printed in New York in 1829 in his colleciton Original Dances, Waltes & Hornpipes for the Violin. The title may honor Martin Van Buren, who became the eighth President of the United States in 1837. At the time of Higgins' publication in 1829, Van Buren was serving as Secretary of State in Andrew Jackson's administration.
