BEAVER, THE. English, Jig. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Could refer to the fashion for beaver fur hats. Prior to Charles and Samuel Thompson's publication, the melody and country dance instructions appeared in John Hinton's Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1758). The tune was entered into the 1770 music manuscript copybook of musician William Clark of Lincoln.
