WEST WIND [1], THE (An Ghaoth Aniar). AKA and see "Gilbert Clancy's Reel," "James Ryan's Favorite," "John Reid's Favourite," "Seán Reid's Reel." Irish, Reel. G Major/Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. The melody is melodically related to the hornpipe "Buachaill Dreoite (1) (An)" and the jig "Bimid ag ol is a' pogadh na mban." Breathnach (1963) says the melody, or at least the first part of it, is the same as the reel “James Ryan's Favorite” in Irish Folk Dance Music (153). Compare also with an untitled reel in Feldman & O’Doherty’s Northern Fiddler (1979, p. 76).

Sources for notated versions: piper Liam Mac Flannchadha/Willie Clancy (1918-1973, Miltown Malbay, west Clare) [Breathnach, Mitchell]; set dance music recorded live at Na Píobairí Uilleann, mid-1980’s [Taylor].

Printed sources: Breathnach (CRÉ I), 1963; No. 72, p. 33. Mitchell (Dance Music of Willie Clancy), 1993; No. 33, p. 47. Taylor (Music for the Sets: Yellow Book), 1995; p. 29.

Recorded sources: Claddagh 4CC 32, Willie Clancy – “The Pipering of Willie Clancy, Vol. 1” (1980). Shanachie 97011, Duck Baker - "Irish Reels, Jigs, Airs and Hornpipes" (1990. Learned from a recording by Sean O'Riada).
