POOR MARY ANN. AKA and see “All Through the Night (1).” Scottish, English; Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is the Welsh air "Ar Hyd y Nos," published in Edward Jones's Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards (1784) and introduced (according to Groves) into an English burlesque as "Ah! hide your nose." Englishwoman Amelia Opie composed words around the year 1800 beginning "Here beneath a willow weepeth poor Mary Ann," which were supplanted in 1825 by Harold Boulton's enduring lyric "All Through the Night."
