Biographical notes

Henry Atkinson [1] (1670-1759) was a Northumbrian musician, probably a fiddler, was the son of a yeoman who became a successful coal trader in Newcastle, Northumberland, at the beginning of the Industrial Age. He used some of his wealth to help fund a charity school in 1709. He was eulogized in the local paper after his death as a man "whose Character in publick and private life has left his Memory and Honour to Trade and exemplary to all."
