KITTY IN THE FOG. AKA and see "Kitten and the Frog (The)," "County Down (1)." American, March (6/8 time). USA, southwestern Pa. A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A fife band tune also known to fiddlers, collected in southwestern Pa. The tune, according to Bayard (1981), belongs to a rather etherial and unnamed but originally Irish tune family whose members include "Young Tom Ennis," "Banks of Lough Gowna," "Stonecutter's Jig (The)," "One Bottle More (2)," "Rambler from Clare (1) (The)," "Mug of Brown Ale (2) (The)," "Ball of Ballynafeidh (The)/Humors of Ballynafeidh," and others, usually floating, titles. The sets of the family usually stray in either the first or second parts and "always seem to be diverging off into other pieces" (p. 530).

Source for notated version: Hiram Horner (fifer from Westmoreland and Fayette Counties, Pa., 1960), George McCune (Indiana County, Pa., 1944), Hiram White (elderly fiddler from Greene County, Pa., 1930's), John Tustin (fiddler from Greene County, Pa., 1944) [Bayard].

Printed sources: Bayard (Dance to the Fiddle), 1981; No. 601A-E, pp. 528-530.
