Ben Newe
BEN NEWE. Scottish, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Aberdeenshire fiddler and composer Alexander Walker (b. 1819), a gardener at Castle Newe, in the employ of Sir Charles Forbes before he emigrated to Massachusetts. Ben Newe (The Holy Hill), Strathdon, is a gentle peak, only 1,100 feet high. There is a holy well on the summit, actually a rainwater pool, that has ancient connections, perhaps Celtic. Pins have been found in it; to this day coins are sometimes thrown into it for good luck. Castle Newe is at the foot of Ben Newe.
