RED CROW, THE. Irish, Reel. A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). A modern composition by fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of the group Altan. Caoimhin Mac Aoidh explains the there is a blackbird found in Ireland, slightly smaller than a crow, whose distinguishing feature is its red legs; thus known as the ‘red crow.’ He states it can be found in cliff face rooks in the mountainous areas of County Donegal in northern Ireland. Paul de Grae says: “That’s the chough, a member of the crow family. It’s found in the rugged, mainly coastal areas all the way up the western seaboard from Cork to Donegal.”
