DEIL AMANG THE MEALMONGERS, THE. AKA - "Devil amang the Meal Men." AKA and see "Bishop (3) (The)," "Valcenciennes." Scottish, English (originally); Jig and Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune appears first in print in the Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 4 (London, 1770) under the title "Bishop (3) (The)," followed by an appearance in John & Thomas Preston's Preston's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1794 (London, 1794) as "Valcenciennes." It was adopted in Scottish Lowlands collections such as Manson's Hamilton's Universal Tune Book, vol. 1 (1854) and Kohler's Violin Repository vol. 2 under the "Meal Mongers/Meal Men" title.
