John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printings of the tune in Robert Bremner's 1768 2nd collection (p. 112) and Daniel Dow's c. 1775 collection (p. 12). See also the strathspey setting of the melody, "Colonel MacKay's Strathspey," in Joshua Campbell's 1789 collection (Glasgow).
