JOHNSON'S REEL [1]. AKA - "Marshall's Strathspey." Scottish, Strathspey. E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Marshall's 1781 collection (p. 10). Moyra Cowie (1999) thinks the title may refer to a servant in Gordon Castle, where Marshall was employed as Steward of the Household. Glasgow-based musician Joshua Campbell included "Johnson's Reel" in his 1789 collection under tht title "Marshall's Strathspey," and added a jig (12/8 time) setting of the melody.
