LUG OF THE SPADE, THE. Irish, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody is attributed to "Jackson" (i.e. Walker 'Piper' Jackson) in Ayr music teacher John Hall's c. 1818 volume A Selection of Strathspeys, Reel, Waltzes & Irish Jigs. However, by what authority the attribution was made is unknown; there is a history of Jackson's name being attached to many jigs, probably not all his compositions. The lug of the spade is the part where you place your foot.
