COUNCELLOR DILLON. Irish, Air (6/8 time). D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody is attributed to blind Irish harper Turlough (O')Carolan by the Thompson's in their 1787 collection. Donal O'Sullivan (1958) could find no specific information about the person of the title, but suspects it may honor a Catholic lawyer, Gerald or Garrett Dillon, a large landowner in Co. Roscommon who led an Irish regiment in the Williamite wars. After their defeat he fled to France, where he died. Hardiman recorded that Counsellor Dillon was "of the noble houe o fLough Glynn", i.e. of the family of "Lord Dillon."
