The tune, a version of “The Boyne Hunt,” was collected in 1903 from Proinseas Mac Suibhne, a farmer and schoolmaster from Fawans, Kilmacrennan, Donegal by Padraig Mac Aodh O’Neill, who published it in his Songs of Uladh. Mac Suibhne learned it from an old fiddler by the name of Aodh Gordon of Ceis Lionain. Caoimhin Mac Aoidh (1994) states he only heard the title used one other time, on a private recording by Donegal fiddler Mickey Doherty.
