John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1782 second collection (p. 48), published in Glasgow by James Aird. The tune was entered into the music manuscript collection of John Buttery who emigrated to Ontario, Canada.
