Back to Granny Went to Meeting with Her Old Shoes On

GRANNY WENT TO MEETING WITH HER OLD SHOES ON. Old-Time. USA, Ky. D Major. Standard or ADae tuning (fiddle). AABB. Learned by the banjo playing Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Judd ("prosperous Kentucky farmers") around 1900. Apparently, says Titon (2001), it was a local tune known to only a few informants.

Granny went to meeting with her old shoes on,
She came back with a new pair on.

However, the similarly-titled tune by Mississppi fiddler Frank Kittrell, "Want to go to Meeting and Got No Shoes," is clearly related.

Source for notated version: Lella Todd (Spout Springs, Estill County, Ky.) [Titon].

Printed sources: Titon (Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes), 2001; No. 54, p. 85.

Recorded sources: New World 226, Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Judd (et. al.) - "That's My Rabbit, My Dog Caught It: Traditional Southern Instrumental Styles" (1978. Recorded by Mark Wilson in the field in 1973). Rounder SS-0145, Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Judd - "Traditional Music on Rounder: A Sampler" (1981). Rounder 0394, Earl Thomas Jr. - "Kentucky Old-Time Banjo" (1999).
