John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Biography:John Riddell's A Collection of the Most Favourite Scots Tunes (1782, p. 18). Admiral George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway KT (1768–1834) was styled Lord Garlies between 1773 and 1806, and was a British naval commander and politician.
