CUSTOM HOUSE, THE. AKA and see "Cashel Jig (The)," "Darby Gallagher's (1)," "East at Glendart," "Housemaid (1) (The)," "Humors of Glendart," "Julia Clifford's," "Shins Around the Fireside (2)," "Tim the Piper." Irish, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. This is the title (which appears in Ryan's Mammoth Collection) used by Sliabh Luachra fiddle player Maurice O'Keeffe, a pupil of Padraig O'Keeffe's and a younger contemporary of Julia Clifford. Paul de Grae remarks it is unusual that he would use this title, probably obtained from Ryan's, rather than identifying it is "Padriag O'Keeffe's" or by O'Neill's titles "East at Glendart" and "Humors of Glendart." Breathnach (1996) identifies the "Custom House" as belonging to the "Jackson's Walk to Limerick" family of tunes (see note), which includes "Green Meadow (The)" and "Geese in the Bog (2) (The)." Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin (1999) maintains the tune was composed by East Galway fiddler Paddy Kelly in the 1930's. Kelly was a member of the famous Aughrim Slopes Ceili Band.
