THREE PANS OF BOXTY, THE. AKA - "Three Scones of Boxtie (The)." AKA and see "Clougher Reel (2) (The)," "Fair Wind (The)," "Potato Garden in Blossom," "Tear the Calico." Irish, Reel (cut time). E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Three Pans of Boxty" is from the c. 1880's music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler Stephen Grier. Researcher Conor Ward finds cognate tunes in the similarly-titled "Three Scones of Boxtie (The)" from flute player Eddie Duffy (Co. Fermanagh), from the Kilfenora Ceili Band as "Clougher Reel (2) (The)," "Tear the Calico," and "Fair Wind (The)/A". He also finds a version in the music manuscript of fiddler Alex Sutherland (1873-1967) of Drumreilly, Co. Leitrim, who submitted this tune to National Folklore Commission in 1957 under the title "Potato Garden in Blossom."

Boxty is a form of a potato pancake in Ireland, associated primarily with the north midlands, north Connacht and southern Ulster, in particular the counties of Mayo, Sligo, Donegal, Fermanagh, Longford, Leitrim and Cavan.

Boxty on the grille, boxty on the pan,
Ir you can't make boxty, you'll never get a man!
