MOLLY MAGUIRE [2]. AKA - "Molly McGuire's." AKA and see "Boyne Hunt (1)," "Highland Skip (2)," "Maid Amongst the Roses (The)," "Niel Gow's Reel (1)," "Niel Gow's," "Perth Hunt (the)," "Perthshire Hunt," "Popcorn (The)," "Richmond Hill (2)," "Sailor's Trip to Liverpool." Irish, Scottish, Canadian; Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title refers perhaps to the clandestine organization of Pa. coal miners in the 1870's called the Molly Maguires, many of whom were Irish. The tune itself belongs to the "Boyne Hunt" family of tunes, although set in the fairly uncommon key of 'E'. Canadian fiddler Don Messer played it as "Popcorn (The)," according to Paul Stewart Cranford (2000).
