GLORY REEL (Ril na Gloire). Irish, Reel. Ireland, Glencolumbkille and Kilcar area, southwest Donegal. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABCC'. The title is an Englished corruption of the Gaelic "Ril na Gloar" ('the drone-sounding reel'). A popular reel in County Donegal, given impetus from the playing of the Deargs of Kilcar; in fact, the tune has been credited to the late Francie Dearg (red-haired) Byrne of Cashel, Kilcar, Donegal. An untitled tune in Brendan Breathnach's Ceol Rince na hÉirreann (vol. II, No. 162) bears strong similarities to the Donegal tune. See also a related untitled tune in The Northern Fiddler (1979), pg. 76(b). Source for notated version: Francie and Mickey Byrne (Donegal) [Feldman & O'Doherty]. Breathnach (CRÉ II), 1976; No. 162 (appears as untitled reel). Feldman & O'Doherty (The Northern Fiddler), 1979; p. 162. Green Linnett GLCE 1137, Altan - "Island Angel" (1993. Learned from the late Francie and Micky Byrne of Kilcar, Donegal). RTE Records, Deargs of Kilcar - "The Donegal Fiddle." Popcorn Behavior - "Journeywork" (1997).
