RAVELED HANK OF YARN [2]. AKA and see "Kate Kelly's Fancy," “Nellie Donovan.” Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. O’Neill (1922) remarks: “A few years ago as Mr. Leech was fingering a stray reel on his flute, Prof. John Cummings (mentioned on page 282-4, Irish Minstrels and Musicians, 1913) remarked that's The Raveled Hank of Yarn and I had forgotten it for the last forty years. Although then in his 85th year he buckled on his pipes, and played the tune in a style which astonished his audience. It is a variant of No. 638 (“Nellie Donovan”), O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland.” An untitled reel, cognate but distanced in both strains, was entered into Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894), for which see "Reel (98)."
