Versions of the melody appear in the 19th century music manuscript collections of County Cork Church of Ireland cleric and uilleann piper biography:James Goodman and County Leitrim piper and fiddler biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894); the former as "Virginia Hornpipe" and the latter as an untitled tune. Grier researchers Fr. John Quinn and Conor Ward find a cognate version in one of the James S. Kerr publications (Glasgow) as "Negro Melody."
