NORTON'S REEL. American, Schottische. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Apparently associated with the Jimmy Norton who is identified as the "Boss jig player" in the Howe publications. Norton was presumably a Boston area musician and/or bandleader with a local reputation, although relatively little him has surfaced to date. Paul Wells says "Norton is easily traced in directories from the early 1860's to the early 1890's. Often his business address was the same as [Boston music publisher Elias] Howe's" [1].Two publications, "Jiggy Jigs (Five Old Favorites) Set 1" and "Real Reels (Five Old Favorites) Set 1" are by a Jimmy Norton and are advertised in Jacobs Band Monthly of January, 1921; however they were copyrighted in 1907. It is not known if this is the same Norton or not. See also Howe's "Norton's Favorite."
