CREAM POT [1], THE. AKA and see "Accomplished Maid (The)," "Grace Hay's Delight," "Kern Staff (The)," "Miss Grace Hayes’ Delight." Scottish, Engish; Jig. G Major ('A' and 'C' parts) & D Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'CC. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Robert Ross's 1780 collection (p. 21), although subsequently it has also been found in the earlier London publishers Johnson's Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 6 (1751), Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 favourite Country Dances (1757), and David Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (1756). It appears in several musician's manuscripts of the 18th and 19th centuries, including the 1770 music manuscript of Northumbrian musician William Vickers, the Thomas Hammersley ms. (London, 1790), and the William Higgot ms. (Cumbria?, c. 1800). The Gows printed the tune under the title "Miss Grace Hayes’ Delight." Country dance directions to the "Cream Pot" appear in H. and E. Phinney's Select Collection of the Newest and Most Favorite Country Dances (Ostego, New York, 1808), and a small edition called A Choice Collection of New and Approved Country Dances (Northampton, Mass., 1796).
