"Battle of Droop Mountain" is from the repertory of fiddlerWilliam Moses "Mose" Coffman (1905-1994), of Greenbrier County, central West Virginia. There was a Wikipedia:Battle of Droop Mountain in the American Civil War in Pocahontas County, West Virginia,, when, in November, 1863, Confederate forces tried to block the rendezvous of raiding Federal forces seeking to raid Confederate railways. They were unsuccessful, and the Union victory resulted in the collapse of Confederate resistance in the state for the remainder of the war. The musical motif of the first several measures of the first strain is shared with several tunes in 'C' major in American 'old-time' tradition, including "Lets go Boys the Party's over," "Wag'ner One Step," "Fun's All Over (1) (The)," and "Devil on a Stump."
