"Mrs Gordon of Cairness' Reel" was composed by biography:William Christie (1778-1849), a dancing master, fiddler-composer and postmaster from Cuminestown, Aberdeenshire. See also his companion piece "Mrs. Gordon of Cairness' Strathspey." Murdoch McDonald's "Colonel McBain's Fancy" is a similar, but different tune, although "Mrs. Gordon of Cairness" is sometimes given as an alternate title on recordings.
