Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. See Bayard's (1944) note for "Annotation:Bonaparte's Retreat (5)." He stated in his 1981 volume that the tune is a member of the ubiquitous "Lazarus" tune family. A Pennsylvania-collected march called "Governor Taylor's March" is similar.
