BOX (THE) FOX. AKA and see "Double Hornpipe," "Blockhouse Dutchman." American, Reel. USA, central and southwestern Pa. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1894) gives that 'box the fox' means to rob an orchard, i.e. steal apples, in British and Irish usage. See also the similar first strain of the Trois copains' "Reel Ti-phonse," recorded in Montreal in 1939.
