TONRA'S JIG (Port Uí Thomhnra). AKA - "Tonroe's Jig." AKA and see “Brendan Tonra’s,” "Tony Rowe's Jig," "Tone Rowe's Jig." Irish, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Flaherty): AA'BB' (Breathnach, Harker/Rafferty). The melody was composed in 1957 by Boston musician Brendan Tonra, while he was still living in his native Gowlaun, County Mayo. It was his third composition and he played it at a Longford Fleadh soon after. Tonra was a fiddler in the Tara Ceili Band in the 1950’s, although the melody was popularized through a recording by the Liverpool Ceili Band and their fiddler, Sean McGuire. Through the ‘folk process’ the title has become garbled or ‘distressed’ and sometimes appears as “Tone Rowe's” or “Tony Rowe’s.”
