Art Stamper learned the tune from the banjo playing and singing of his father Hiram, and converted it to a fiddle tune. He remembered words to the tune (that turn out to be the chorus), similar to a singing-call for dancing, as:***Swing the lady up and down, swing the lady round;'Swing the lady up and down, swing the lady home.'''***Ruth Crawford Seeger included the tune in her book on children's folk songs,and her daughter Peggy sang it on a CD based on the book.Peggy sang this verse with the chorus given above:***I built my lady a fine brick house, I built in a garden;'''I put her in, but she jumped out, So fare thee well, my darling.***The tune has some resemblances to “Johnson Boys.”
